Raleigh, N.C. — A North Carolina lawmaker was catching heat on social media Wednesday for comments on his Facebook page comparing President Abraham Lincoln and the U.S. Supreme Court to Adolf Hitler.
Someone posting as Rep. Larry Pittman, R-Cabarrus, was responding on his “Larry Pittman for NC House” page to critics who derided him for filing House Bill 870, under which the state would refuse to recognize the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage and would ban recognition of those marriages in the state.
Pittman said his bill “would be upholding the law of this State in spite of the opinion of a federal court that had no business interfering” in the state’s 2012 constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.
“Memo: the Civil War is over. The Fed won. Get over it,” Dave Flomberg commented on the page.
Pittman then responded, “And if Hitler had won, should the world just get over it? Lincoln was the same sort if [sic] tyrant, and personally responsible for the deaths of over 800,000 Americans in a war that was unnecessary and unconstitutional.”
“Holy crap you’re delusional!” Mike Landona commented.
“What?! I think you’ll find that your view of President Lincoln is out of step with Americans in every corner of our great country, save for fringe extremists who still can’t get over the abolition of owning human beings,” Ryan Feinberg added.
