Since falling in the NCHSAA 3-A state final last year, Terry Sanford’s boys’ tennis team has been working toward a singular goal.
“We still want to get redemption from last year,” Henry Lieberman said. “That would be really sweet to us.”
The Bulldogs (13-0) will get their chance Saturday, earned with a 6-3 win against visiting Chapel Hill in Wednesday’s 3-A East regional final.
Terry Sanford won’t get another crack at Western powerhouse Marvin Ridge, the team that beat the Bulldogs last year for its second straight state title.
Instead, the Bulldogs will face Matthews Weddington (13-3-1), a 5-2 winner over Marvin Ridge for the West title.
Lieberman, who won the 3-A individual singles title over the weekend, and his brother Nathan had the match-clinching doubles win against Chapel Hill.
Terry Sanford hadn’t needed a doubles win since early April and didn’t drop a singles match through the first three rounds of dual team play.
The Bulldogs went 4-2 in singles against Chapel Hill and needed just one doubles match to advance to the state final.
The Lieberman brothers cruised out to a 6-1 lead but Tigers’ doubles team David Mirzoyan and Paul Tsui hung around to win four more games before Henry and Nathan finally won at 10-5.
