DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt sophomore quarterback Daniel Jones has been named to the preseason Davey O’Brien Award Watch List. The honor is presented annually to the nation’s top quarterback by the Davey O’Brien Foundation. The selection marks Jones’ first year on the preseason watch list.
Jones has already been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, presented to the college player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club. He has also earned a spot on Athlon Sports’ preseason All-ACC fourth team.
A 6-5, 215-pound Charlotte, N.C., product, Jones turned in an outstanding rookie campaign, starting all 12 games and completed 270-of-430 (.638) passes for 2,836 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions as well as a pass efficiency rating of 126.28. He also owns 141 rushes for 486 (3.45) yards and seven scores to compile 3,322 yards of total offense. During the course of the season, Jones established or matched 23 school records, including most total offensive yards by a freshman.
Jones owns career per game averages of 40.50 rushing yards, 236.33 passing yards and 276.83 total offensive yards. He became the first freshman to lead Duke in passing yards and total offensive yards since Thaddeus Lewis in 2006.
