Cape Fear (4-1, 2-0) at Gray’s Creek (0-5, 0-2)
After falling behind Terry Sanford 24-7 two weeks ago, Cape Fear has outscored its opponents 61-7. That includes last week’s 28-7 romp against Overhills. Zaire Boykin has been one of the offensive catalysts. After struggling in a loss at New Hanover, Boykin has averaged 7.2 yards per carry with five touchdown runs. The woes at Gray’s Creek have emanated from the Bears’ defense. After looking stout in a season-opening 17-14 loss against Southern Lee, the Bears have surrendered more than 43 points per game.
E.E. Smith (4-1, 2-0) at Douglas Byrd (0-5, 0-1)
The Golden Bulls are riding the arm and legs of Xeaiver Bullock, the county’s leading passer (809 yards) and No. 5 rusher (433 yards). His 1,242 total yards from scrimmage easily leads the county. While the offense is riding high, teams that can run the ball seem to give the Smith defense some problems. Douglas Byrd can’t catch a break while breaking in a lot of youth, but the Eagles have shown the capacity to move the ball on the ground between the 20s. They need a breakthrough in the red zone, though.
