DURHAM, N.C. – As Duke prepares for the postseason, Blue Devil Network and GoDuke.com will count down the top plays from the first 12 games of the 2017 season. The site will feature one highlight per day with the top play revealed on Tuesday when the Blue Devils (6-6) meet Northern Illinois (8-4) in the Quick Lane Bowl at 5:15 p.m. on ESPN.
The most dramatic victory of the year provided Duke the top play of the 2017 campaign with Bryon Fields Jr.’s 61-yard interception return for a touchdown to seal the Blue Devils’ victory at North Carolina. Fields Jr. became Duke’s all-time leader in interception returns for touchdowns with four, as he stepped in front of a Chazz Surratt pass and pushed the Blue Devil lead to 27-17 with less than four minutes to play. The win, which marked Duke’s fourth in the last six years against the Tar Heels, served at the 100th victory in head coach David Cutcliffe’s career as well as the 500th triumph in Duke gridiron history.
Fields Jr. ended the regular season with 37 interceptions, three interceptions and seven pass breakups. The team captain booked four or more tackles in five contests.
