Thirty Cumberland County wrestlers survived the NCHSAA individual regional tournament held Friday and Saturday to advance to the state competition.
In the 3-A Mid-East tournament, held at Chapel Hill, Cape Fear continued its success, sending seven wrestlers through to the next round. Leading the way were 132-pounder Dallas Wilson and 160-pounder Michael Vernagallo, who each claimed their respective regional titles. Wilson won by major decision, and Vernagallo pinned his opponent in the second period. Terry Sanford’s Ferris Allen also finished first, earning a 12-8 decision over Cape Fear’s Joey Saldana at 170.
Three county wrestlers won their weight classes at the 4-A Mid-East tournament, hosted by Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons. Pine Forest senior Daniel Peede won at 152 pounds in sudden victory, as did South View heavyweight Travis Martinez. Jack Britt’s Luke Roberson posted a 6-1 decision over South View’s Tyrese Byrd to win at 182 pounds.
The first round of the 4-A and 3-A state tournaments is Thursday at Greensboro Coliseum.
