Pyeongchang, South Korea —
Each Olympic sport has its own fans – some more devoted than others. From the first time Ken Childs saw bobsledding, he was hooked.
Childs, a lifelong racing fan, is now a blogger who writes about the sport.
He never expected to be drawn to the winter sport, but as he learned about it, he learned the connection between auto racing and bobsledding is a close one.
And the ties to his home state of North Carolina are strong.
“You wouldn’t expect a lot of North Carolinians to be involved, but there’s a lot more than you would (think),” he said.
Many of the same principles apply to both sports – from speed to aerodynamics.
And in Motorsports country, there is plenty of expertise in both.
From his home in Durham, Childs started the blog, slidingonice.com, which has exploded in popularity among fans of the winter sport.
He’s now in PyeongChang, blogging from the Olympics for the first time.
“(It’s) overwhelming! Even when you go to a world championship for bobsled skeleton luge whatever its big but it’s not this, this is just overwhelming,” Childs said.
